Addon Spotlight: Outfitter

By Lyssa, May 21, 2009 3:51 pm

Welcome to the first installment of Addon Spotlight here at WoW-Addict.  For this first edition of this series I though I would cover an addon that is near and dear to my heart, an addon that I thought I might no longer need after a recent in-game update by Blizzard.

On Tuesday Blizzard introduced their new Equipment Manager (EM), an addition to the UI that was originally supposed to be released with 3.1.0 and dual-speccing.  This new feature was delayed because Blizzard felt that it needed further work before it was ready for primetime.  Having used the EM on the 3.1.0 PTR and having used it this past Tuesday I’m not really sure what they waited for.  The EM is just as useless now as it was so many months ago on the PTR.  They haven’t added any features, which means that the EM is still essentially a lame equipment macro.

The main downside to the EM is that you can’t edit an equipment set.  If you get an upgrade you are stuck having to re-create the entire “profile” from scratch.  Whose bright idea was that?  How is that user friendly?

So, what is Outfitter and what does this have to do with it?

Outfitter is an “outfit” mod that allows you to create, edit and save equipment profiles as well as equip them to your character on-the-fly.  It can automatically create sets based on criteria (eg. resist) and it can equip them automatically when certain criteria are met, for instance- entering a specific zone or battleground.  I feel that Outfitter is even more useful now that we have dual-speccing and it certainly blows the Blizzard offering out of the water when it comes to feature set and usability.

Having been a tank for most of my wow-playing career I’ve always had to carry around multiple armor sets- tanking, dps, resist, etc so I’ve always had Outfitter to manage my equipment sets and make changing my gear on the fly a simple task.

From the author:

Outfitter is an equipment management addon which gives you fast access to multiple outfits to optimize your abilities in PvE and PvP, automated equip and unequip for convenience doing a variety of activities, or to enhance role-playing.

Outfitter includes an icon bar for fast access to your outfits, a minimap menu for fast compact access, support for LibDataBroker, scripting with a library of pre-made scripts for most common tasks, outfits optimized for a particular stat, item comparisons across outfits, quick access to items via the character sheet, and more.

I personally don’t use the scripting because I prefer to choose when/why my equipment switches out but obviously some people find it useful.

Main Menu

As you can see, outfit creation is as easy as clicking on the outfitter button at the top-right of the character window (or the icon around the minimap) and either creating a new outfit of selecting an existing one.  When you click on the outfit name the checkboxes over each item slot will appear to show if that slot is being used for that outfit.  Clicking on any slot will bring up a small popup window with all same-slot items in your inventory (or bank if you have the bank window open) so you can easily change the item out with another.

Also, you can quickly activate outfits from the minimap icon:

Overall Outfitter is still a superior option to the lackluster offering that Blizzard has cooked up.

Who doesn’t love addons? I love them. I might actually be addicted to them, last time QuestHelper broke I was literally unable to do any quests…seriously.

So, I’m thinking that I’m going to start featuring addons that I use and maybe even try to get some of my guildies to do write-ups about their favorite addons.

No Stock UI

There is a new WoW blog that started up a few weeks ago that I’ve been following, No Stock UI. The folks over there are all about addons. When you have some time check them out, they may introduce you to just the addon you’ve been looking for.
